Taika Waiti introduced us to Hela, the Goddess of Death as he made his MCU debut with Thor: Ragnarok. The MCU deviated from the comics where Balder the Brave is the sibling of Thor & Loki that people are unfamiliar with. Hela on the other hand is the daughter of Loki in the comics. But it’s okay. This was a welcome change in Ragnarok, and Waititi handled it extremely well. He came in as a fresh breath of air and totally turned things around with the franchise, killing off everything that didn’t work previously, or perhaps giving it all a break. But there’s one big question that hasn’t been asked by many people. And that question is – Who is Hela’s mother.
After Thor 2 turned out to be the weakest entry in the MCU, the Thor franchise was in desperate need of someone like Taika. Ragnarok is such a well made film that many consider it to be among their top 5 MCU movies. And one of the reasons why it was so good was because it had a strong villain in Hela. Cate Blanchett played the first ever female big bad in the MCU, and she did it with total finesse. And the good thing is that we’re surely not done with Hela. If you watch the moment she supposedly died, you’d see that she actually escaped using a portal. So, she is alive and we’d probably see her return in Love and Thunder.
Upon her return, she might answer the question about her mother. We know that she is Odin’s firstborn, and a rightful heir to the throne of Asgard (New Asgard now). We know that she was the leader of the Einherjar, the Asgardian army, and she acted as Odin’s personal executioner. That’s why she began to be called the Goddess of Death. But fighting with her father, she grew too ambitious. Odin wanted to stop after conquering the 9 realms and maintain peace. But Hela wanted more. She battled the Asgardians and she battled Odin. The Allfather defeated her, but he couldn’t muster the strength to kill his own daughter. So, the only alternative he had was to imprison her in Hel. Upon Odin’s death, Hela was free and she returned to take back what’s rightfully hers.
Thor referred to Hela as his half-sister in Infinity War. So, that gave us the confirmation that Hela isn’t the daughter of Queen Frigga. In fact, it is truly possible that like Thor, Odin even kept Frigga in the dark about Hela. But let’s come to the point now. If Frigga isn’t Hela’s mother, then who is? If the MCU were to follow the comics, then we will soon be getting the revelation that Angrboða, the Giantess is her mother. In the comics, she is the mother of Hela. And in Norse Mythology, she and Loki have many monstrous children.
In the comics, Thor is also not the son of Frigga, but he is the son of the Giantess, Gaea. But the MCU has confirmed that Thor is indeed Frigga’s son. So, perhaps the MCU is going to involve a Giantess any way by making Angrboða the one whom Odin mated with. This might not be true as it is just a wild prediction. Another wild prediction is that Hela could’ve actually ran off to her when she escaped right before Surtur plunged his sword into Asgard’s core. That would answer where she has been all this time. Let’s see if Thor 4 reveals any of this.
