WandaVision viewers have been left reeling following the latest episode, due to an emotional callback.
The first of Disney+’s Marvel TV shows released its third episode today (22 January), and fans got nostalgic due to the MCU’s first mention of a deceased character since they were killed off.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
This week’s episode picks up where the last one left off: Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) is pregnant and Vision (Paul Bettany) is shocked to notice their unborn baby is growing at quick speed. The 30-minute outing ends with Wanda giving birth to twins (which seems to herald a future Avengers film).
Looking at her newborn children, Wanda gets emotional when she tells fellow Westview citizen, Geraldine (Teyonah Parris), that she herself was a twin, and pays tribute to her brother, Pietro.
Also known as Quicksilver, Pietro (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) was introduced to the MCU at the same time as Wanda – in 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron – but he was killed off in the same film by the villain of the sequel’s title, who was voiced by James Spader.
Fans couldn’t believe that Pietro not only received his first mention since 2014 – with a musical tribute delivered in their native language of Sokovian, no less – but also that Geraldine suddenly responded: “He was killed by Ultron, wasn’t he?”
It’s this statement that seemingly sees Wanda evict Geraldine – revealed to be a Sword agent – from the sitcom world of Westview she seems to have constructed.
“When Wanda said Pietro’s name and she started singing in Sokovian and then she shed a tear I HAVE CHILLS ALL OVER,” one person wrote.
Another added: “This was the moment where the show was letting us know it wasn’t all about the laughs. This was very emotional, especially as she remembered something.”
One other WandaVision viewer wrote: The fact that Wanda just said PIETRO felt so shocking because she never got to even mention him since Age of Ultron? I’m so glad she’s finally the centre and it’s her time to explore her story. This is all I’ve been waiting for.
WandaVision continues Fridays on Disney+.
