No, we’re not going back to the year 2014. Jamie Foxx’s Electro really is joining Sony’s Spider-Man 3, officially making him part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Foxx is in final talks to reprise his role as Electro, a character he played in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This time around, he won’t do battle with Andrew Garfield, but rather Tom Holland, who has played the web slinger since Captain America: Civil War.

No details about Foxx’s involvement were revealed, but it’s a crossover we didn’t see coming. With that said, we never thought we’d see J.K. Simmons play J. Jonah Jameson again, yet he featured in a cameo at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

How is this going to work you ask? Well, Marvel Studios introduced the concept of the multi-verse in Avengers: Endgame, which allowed characters to jump between different universes. And remember what happened in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse? It’s very likely Sony and Marvel will come up with a multi-verse angle, using the incident in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to explain Electro’s presence in Tom Holland’s world.

Many of the other cast members we’ve seen in the previous two Spider-Man movies are expected to return in Spider-Man 3, including Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori. What about other superheroes from the MCU? That we don’t know, but there’s plenty of time to figure that out ahead of the film’s December 17, 2021 release date.
