The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Anthony Mackie has said he thinks the series would have had higher box office takings than Tom Holland’s Spider-Man if it was released in cinemas.

Marvel’s second series for Disney Plus, following the studio’s smash-hit WandaVision, stars Mackie and Sebastian Stan as the titular heroes. Since its debut two weeks ago, the series has received mostly favourable reviews.

Speaking about its success, Mackie has said he believes that the series would outperform Spider-Man, starring Holland, if given a theatrical release.

Mackie told Sirius XM’sThe Jess Cagle Podcast with Julia Cunningham that “there is competition within Marvel”.

“I want to see somebody do an algorithm or figure out if we were in a movie theatre how much money we would have made because I know it would’ve been more than Tom Holland as Spider-Man,” said the actor.

Holland’s turn as the superhero in the Spider-Man: Homecoming film trilogy has proven to be a huge success for Marvel, with the latest entry Far From Home grossing $1.1bn (£800m) worldwide. The 2019 film is in the top 10 of the highest-grossing MCU films of all time. It also surpassed Skyfall to become Sony’s highest-grossing film worldwide.

It is almost a given that the highly anticipated next instalment – titled No Way From Home – will perform successfully upon its release in December this year.

While Falcon and Winter Soldier became Disney Plus’s most-watched series premiere earlier this month, it is hard to measure how the viewership would translate to box office numbers.
