Spider-Man fans have been sent into a frenzy by the first trailer for the forthcoming MCU sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home.

There is particular buzz surrounding the return of Alfred Molina as Dr Otto “Doc Ock” Octavius, a role he first played in Spider-Man 2 back in 2004.

As the trailer confirms, No Way Home will formally introduce the concept of a multiverse to the MCU, after a spell cast by Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) goes awry.

Along with Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus will return, seemingly from an alternate dimension.

Molina is seen near the trailer’s end, addressing what fans initially believed to be Tom Holland’s character with a sinister “Hello, Peter”.

However, fans are now pointing out that it’s likely the villain would have no idea who Holland’s version of the character is, which is leading to theories that he could be addressing Tobey Maguire’s incarnation.

Fans have reacted enthusiastically to the reveal, sharing their excitement on social media.

“My love for Alfred Molina knows no bounds,” wrote one fan.

Someone else wrote: “I do not care that we did not get to see Tobey [Maguire] and Andrew [Garfield] in that trailer when the trailer was that exciting and gave us Lizard sort of and Doc Ock and teases for Sandman, Electro and Green Goblin. I’m so happy.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is released in cinemas on 17 December.
