Olivia Wilde is set to direct a “female-centered” Marvel film for Sony Pictures, and it could see the live action debut of Spider-Woman.

According to a report from Deadline, Wilde only recently committed to the project after nearly passing it up. Apparently, it’s a high priority for Sony, which has several other Marvel projects in the works, including Morbius starring Jared Leto.

While Sony has yet to confirm which superhero will lead the film, Deadline claims the project is expected to center on Spider-Woman. Wilde essentially confirmed the rumor by quote-tweeting Deadline’s story with a spider emoji on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Spider-Woman on the big screen, and it won’t be the last either. Gwen Stacy previously appeared as the web slinger in Into the Spider-Verse, and there’s reportedly a spin-off that will focus on Stacy’s character in the works. That project will come in addition to a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse.

Katie Silberman is rumored to pen the movie’s script. She previously wrote the script to 2019’s Booksmart, which Wilde co-wrote and directed. Deadline also reports that Amy Pascal is producing, with Rachel O’Connor executive producing.

With the box office unlikely to get back into full swing until 2021, comic book fans have plenty of female-led films to look forward to, including Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel 2, to name a few.
