Marvel star Emily VanCamp has admitted that she was surprised by the backlash to her kiss with Chris Evans in Captain America: Civil War.

The actor starred as Sharon Carter in the 2016 adventure film, in which her character shares a kiss with the superhero.

However, the moment was criticised by fans who argued that Captain America was actually in love with the recently deceased Peggy Carter, AKA Sharon’s great-aunt.

Speaking to Variety, VanCamp, who reprised her role in a recent episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, admitted that she hadn’t expected the fan response to the scene.

“There was quite a bit of backlash about that,” VanCamp said.

“I mean, look, you have to laugh. Some of these storylines play and some of them don’t. But, you know, I thought that was an amazing film. It’s just one of those things.”

Asked if she was “surprised” by the response, VanCamp continued: “Yeah, I think we all were. I mean, we certainly did our best.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is Marvel’s second series for Disney Plus and has already featured a number of crossovers with other MCU projects.
