Ever since the Marvel movies have been pushed back, people have stopped talking about Black Widow & Eternals. There are no new updates on those films. Work on Eternals is going on in remote locations. We just have to wait for a couple months and Marvel will drop the first trailer of Eternals. That’s when people would start talking about the film again. This is as exciting a project as any other big budget MCU film. Why? Because there are plenty of diverse super powered heroes in the roster. But Marvel will have to take steps to prevent all these heroes from getting way too over powered like they are in the comics.
All the Eternals share a basic set of powers in the comics, i.e. superhuman strength, durability, stamina, flight, telepathy, matter manipulation illusions and immortality. Apart from these basic powers, every Eternal has a distinct ability/talent like Ajak is an excellent hand to hand combatant, Thena can teleport & is also a telepath and so on. First of all, Marvel will have to nerf down the extremely lethal powers that Eternals have. Secondly, they cannot allow all the Eternals to have the same basic powers and then the distinct set of individual powers.
For instance, Mikkari the speedster cannot have superhuman strength & flight as well. That is the only way they’d be able to keep the characters special and individually distinct. A plot leak of the film did reveal the powers of the Eternals characters. Let’s take a look into those:
“Sersi (Gemma Chan) is the Eternals’ spy and has psychic powers.
Ajak (Salma Hayek) is the leader of the Eternals and has healing powers.
Ikaris (Richard Madden) is the mightiest of the Eternals and can manipulate cosmic energy.
Thena (Angelina Jolie) is deadliest of the Eternals and has superhuman reflexes.
Gilgamesh (Don Lee) is the strongest of the Eternals and has superhuman strength and endurance.
Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) is the Eternals’ scout and has superhuman speed.
Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) is the Eternals’ wisecracking, fun-loving fighter.
Phastos (Bryan Tyree Henry) is the Eternals’ inventor.
Sprite (Lia McHugh) is the Eternals’ storyteller and can create illusions.
Druig (Barry Keoghan) can control people’s minds, particularly their fears.”
Now this is good. Every Eternal is distinctly special here like the mutants are. And it seems that Marvel has gotten rid of one particular power for the good of the story. While the Eternals are immortal beings, they actually have complete control of all the molecules in their bodies in the comics. Meaning, they cannot be killed as a wound would lead them to just regenerate molecules & heal. Not everyone could have this incapability of being killed in the film because the stakes in the won’t feel as high as they could. So, even though the Eternals could live for an Eternity, they would have to be killable. And it does look like Marvel is going with that plan.
We have talked a lot about the Eternals but we haven’t heard enough talk about the Deviants. Marvel Scooper Roger Wardell called the Deviants as “The Changing People.” He said that the appearance of the Deviants is going to surprise many of us. That could mean that the Skrulls are the deviants in the MCU or at least they are a faction that belongs to the deviants due to their appearance. It’d be interesting to see how Marvel has altered their backstories and what will be the dynamics among the Eternals & the Deviants, and among Eternals themselves.
Eternals releases on February 12, 2021. Here’s the official Synopsis of Marvel’s Eternals:
“Marvel Studios’ The Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants.”
