Why Tony’s Afterlife Scene Was Cut:
Amongst the new bunch of deleted scenes that we’ve got, the greatest has to be Tony Stark meets the adult version of Morgan Stark in the afterlife. Back in Avengers: Infinity War, right when Thanos snapped, we saw him get a visit to the Soul World where he spoke to baby Gamora, the only person he ever loved in his life. But no one really asked whether Tony or Bruce went to the Soul World to meet their loved ones because Endgame didn’t keep that idea going at all. But as it turns out, there was an entire scene shot.
Right after snapping, Tony goes to the Soul World and he speaks to an older version of his daughter Morgan. Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why shows up as older Morgan Stark who comes in to tell Tony that she is proud of what her father did to save the world. While this scene would’ve given us closure, the creatives previously explained that they had to remove it because it wasn’t fitting in with the rest of the film. Why is that? Because throughout the film, we saw baby Morgan Stark and we shared absolutely no connection with Katherine Langford as Morgan.
Now while speaking to Inverse, director Joe Russo explained the real reason as to why this scene was left out from the film:
“Part of the process is we go through a long period of exploration when we make these films. That starts at the very beginning with [writers Chris] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely where we sit around and just talk about the story for months, what the possibilities are, where we can go. That sort of sense of exploration continues all the way through our shooting of the film and post-production. So there was a while where the idea was that when you use the Soul Stone there is sort of this moment that you have this kind of reckoning with something that may be left unresolved in your soul.”
Joe Russo continued:
“Since Thanos had that poignant experience with his daughter in Infinity War, we started playing with the idea that there was something interesting and resonant in the symmetry with Tony and his daughter. The reason we ended up moving away from it is, once we shot it, we began to understand as we were actually shooting it, is that the audience didn’t have a relationship with his adult daughter in the film. They had a relationship with his young daughter but not with his adult daughter. It didn’t feel like it was as powerful as we may have thought so we began to move away from it.”
Since this scene was deleted, we can assume that Katherine Langford was never in Avengers: Endgame. She technically isn’t the older version of Morgan Stark so she could star in the MCU as some other character. There are plenty of new characters that are bound to step into the MCU, and a talented actress like Katherine Langford could play any one of those. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. Come on Marvel, it still isn’t late. Get her to play Kate Bishop!
Marvel’s future is huge and there’s a lot that could happen. Black Widow is going to kick off the future slate on May 1. Here’s how the rest of the Phase 4 slate looks like – The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in Fall 2020, The Eternals on November 6, 2020, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on February 12, 2021, WandaVision in Spring 2021, Loki in Spring 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 7, 2021, Spider-Man 3 on July 16, 2021, What If? In Summer 2021, Hawkeye in Fall 2021, and Thor: Love and Thunder on November 5, 2021. Following these are Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight and She-Hulk. Black Panther 2 has been scheduled for May 6, 2022.
