While most people have loved Robert Downey Jr.’s performance in the MCU, there are many (including me) that appreciate the contribution and performance of Chris Evans even more. The Russo Brothers and Endgame writers were able to tie up Captain America’s story in a very unique way with Avengers: Endgame. Chris Evans has stated in the past that Captain America 4 still might be possible, but for him to return, the plot of the movie has to add something meaningful to the story of Captain America. It cannot be just a cash grab.
Looking at the slate of Phase 4 & the potential slate of Phase 5, it is obvious that a Captain America 4 is not the biggest priority for Kevin Feige and co. But we could imagine that years down the line, it might happen if Marvel would be looking to change the direction of the MCU. Since Thor has got a fourth movie, it is obvious that Marvel isn’t hellbent on ending a franchise with just 3 movies. So, a Captain America 4 could always happen.
The Captain America Trilogy has been the greatest that Marvel has brought forward, so people would welcome Captain America 4 with open arms. Even Chris Evans recently stated that he already misses playing Captain America. Here’s what he told Backstage:
“I absolutely loved my time with Marvel; I already miss it. but there’s no denying that it is very exciting to just have complete freedom to pursue whatever my creative appetite wants.”
We’ve seen how Evans is enjoying his work outside of Marvel as well. He appeared in Knives Out and he was loved in his role. He recently appeared in the critically acclaimed mini series Defending Jacob on Apple TV+. He has always wanted to appear in movies and shows that test him as an actor. So, he surely is getting to do that. But he has also stated in the past that he wouldn’t actually mind making a return to the MCU years down the line. In an episode of “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors,” he spoke to Scarlett Johansson last year.
Here’s how their conversation went:
“Scarlett Johansson – Would you come back?.
Chris Evans – To Marvel? You never say never. I love the character. I don’t know.
It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. There are other things that I’m working on right now. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”
So, if Marvel were to come up with a good story in about 3-4 years, then they could actually bring Chris Evans back. While his story seems complete right now, there is a bit that could still be done with it. Because, the way Cap went out, we were left asking about what he really did after he left with the Infinity Stones. It seemed that he lived a happy life with Peggy after successfully delivering all Infinity Stones & Mjolnir back to where they were taken from. But was making that delivery so easy? Was his life in the past really happy and uneventful. Maybe there is a story that needs to be told here. The Russo brothers have just teased that if this kind of a story were to happen, then they’d be happy to return for it.
ComicBookMovie recently interviewed the Russos, and here’s what Joe Russo said about Captain America’s time travel adventures:
“It would be a great story to tell, no question. I don’t know whether it needs to be told, but it would be a great story to tell, and we’d love to tell it, but I think there are other stories to move on to now.”
Everyone seems to be saying that there is a story to tell here, but Marvel won’t take a crack at it just yet. Maybe they never will. Maybe they are going to leave an open ending here for us. But if they do decide to make a Captain America 4 with Steve’s time travel adventures, we’d be in big time!
That’s because there’s so much story to tell here. There are so many questions to answer. How did Cap manage to put all the stones back exactly where they were taken from? We didn’t see him take any orb like structure to house the power stone, a glass cube for the Tesseract or even a Loki’s scepter. How was he planning to return the Soul Stone? How would his encounter with Red Skull go? We really got to see him wield Mjolnir for a very short span of time. He would’ve used the hammer throughout his time travel adventures before returning it. So, more Cap & Mjolnir scenes would surely be a plus if Marvel ever decides to tell Cap’s time travel story. Let’s just hope they do.
But for now, we just have to believe that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” in hindsight is a Captain America 4. Would you like to see a Captain America 4 with Chris Evans? Tell us in the comments down below.
I just have the biggest passion for everything cinematic! I want to share this passion with everyone through my writing about Hollywood Movies and TV. Other than that, I am a big sports fanatic and enthusiast. I’d like to write about my favorite sports as well some day.
